In the early 1980s I was working for the Moody Foundation in Galveston, Texas. I was part of the original planning group for the present
Moody Gardens. Back then, I was encouraging the board members to build a zoo type exhibition based on domestic farm animals with an
appearance of the late 1800s. In discussing the project with one of the ladies working in the Foundation, she suggested the name of
Texas Recollections.
The project took an extreme turn in a different direction and I eventually left the foundation. The name lay dormant for many years while I
pursued other interest. By 1995 our family was involved in Civil War reenactments. We realized our passion was history. I revived the
name and used it for our farm in Huntsville.
In the latter part of 1995, Claudia and I were talking to the curator of the Sam Houston
Museum in Huntsville, Texas about our cavalry unit coming to the next Sam Houston Folk
Festival. Claudia mentioned they did not offer a program about horses during the
festival. Dr. Nolan said, “You come up with something and we will give you support and a
place to do it.”
In April of 1996 I gave my first living history program about a man that captured wild
horses during the 1880s and how the animal was trained. My horse Shado was trained
to do a few tricks to illustrate the story line. Over the years we added more tricks and
changed the narrative at times. My family helped me take this program around to many
folk festivals and cowboy gatherings in East Texas. This experience prepared us to
move into the next phase of our destiny.
During one of the programs in 2000 I heard a still quiet voice come to me and say, “Larry,
you need to be doing something like this with a gospel message in a church.” Since then we
have worked toward developing the Lasso Your Dream program. I lost Shado in an accident
in 2001and had to start over with a new horse, Ocowan.
Since the early beginnings deciding what to say and coordinating the tricks has been a
monstrous task. I read Bruce Wilkinson’s book
The Dream Giver and realized my God given
purpose was to point people toward Jesus by using a horse.
